📚 Shining the Spotlight on Young Writers at M.U.S.E.
Welcome to M.U.S.E., where the curtain rises on student voice, and imagination takes centre stage! We believe every talented young writer deserves their moment in the spotlight-a chance to be published.
Founded by Shannon Mulder, an English teacher at Mackillop Catholic College, M.U.S.E. is a publishing platform for students across our diocese, built to showcase the incredible talent that too often stays backstage. It’s where short stories, poems, articles and art step confidently into the light-not as practice pieces, but as creative performances worthy of an audience.
Our mission is simple:
To publish as many young writers as we can!
The stories and articles we publish have been identified by English teachers as original, high-quality and evocative compositions for their age range through class activities and creative writing assessments; these students are then approached for their permission to publish.
In publishing the next generation of storytellers, I hope to inspire a love of creativity, to encourage reading and writing as powerful forms of self-expression, and to remind students that their ideas are stage-worthy. After all, our words find their power when they meet their audience.
For our teachers at MacKillop, M.U.S.E. offers a front-row view of excellence and is used as a pedagogical tool in the classroom to model:
What’s possible when imagination meets craft.
How to respond to a stimulus.
How to integrate a variety of narrative and language features intentionally.
Genres and their conventions
How writing evolves as students grow older.
Each story and article features a learning activity embedded within the page to extend students and encourage independent writing.
