After the Rain
A poem composed by Katherine (Year 7)
After the rain, I stepped outside,
The world was quiet, fresh, and wide.
The plants still cried in morning light,
Raindrops clung soft tears in sight.
I walked along the garden bed,
Where flowers bowed their sleepy heads.
The warm sun rose and cleared the way,
Dancing through the blooms that swayed.
Each petal lifted, soft and wet,
Like waking dreams I won't forget.
By the willow tree I stood,
Its long arms drooped above the wood.
It wept in silence, still and low,
Shivering in the cold windβs blow
Mother Earth breathed deep and slow.
I wandered farther, boots in mud,
And by the creek, I heard a thud
Then creaks and groans from frogs nearby,
Like old chairs rocking, slow and dry.
A mother duck, so calm and small,
Led her babies, one and all.
They waddled close, not far behind,
As if afraid of being left behind.
Tall trees stood like wise old men,
Their roots sunk deep in earth again.
Their trunks were thick, their bark was worn,
With secrets kept since they were born.
And still, I saw the flowers cry
The rain had stayed, it did not dry.
