Level Three
When the world as we knew it ended, something else entirely came along and stood in its place. Society collapsed instantaneously into a frenzy of fear, uncertainty and entitlement. Supermarkets and stores were looted until their windows were nothing but broken eyes staring out across a vacant wasteland. Barely anyone survived the cataclysm that nature ensued, and even less survived the darkest vestiges of human nature that haunt us still.
The sky is blanketed in a thick grey ash that chokes anything which grows from the ground. It is estimated that in two years the ash will clear and society may begin to etch its way out of the rubble.
As far as you know, yours is the only community of people which survives. Your methods for surviving have been dubious, to say the least, but sometimes we must dance precariously between the black and the white. Now, we must live in the grey if humanity is to survive at all.
There are 954 people apart from yourself within your community, and in a happy turn of events 104 babies are expected to be born over the next two years. In a tragic turn of events 89 people are expected to die within the next two years. 20% of the wider population are under 12 years old.
Your community has somehow (cough cough) acquired the following food and medical supplies:
57 tonnes of rice
1.8 Mega litres of water
40 tonnes of flour
250,000 x 400 gram cans of vegetables
50 tonnes of powdered milk
250,000 x 400 gram cans of meat
You have been charged with distributing the rations equitably. Accurately use ratios to determine the amount of food, per item, each adult and child will be supplied, per day, that will ensure that these resources will last the full two years as you wait for the ash cloud to disperse. Don’t forget that children under 12 are on half rations.
Failure to calculate these rations accurately will mean that this community will not survive the two years.
